MD Scholarship

Mara Jankowski (she/her) is a medical student at Kiel University (CAU) and a doctoral student at the Department of Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital (UKSH). She is also involved in Fem*Med Kiel, a student group that aims a more feministic medicine. She would also like to use her doctoral thesis to contribute to more diversity and inclusion in medicine.

For the summer semester 2025, Mara Jankowski is part of the SFB 1665 “Sexdiversity” and is investigating the influence of gender and sex specific stereotypes on individual pain perception and tolerance in cisgender, transgender and non-binary people. The study is a joint project with Sara Karies, who is also investigating the influence of gender and sex related somatosensory phenotypes on pain perception, inhibition and modulation in cisgender, transgender and non-binary individuals. On the one hand, this research is relevant because it is intended to contrast the influence of genetic-hormonal components of sex with social aspects (gender) and could thus provide an initial impression of the importance of the respective variables. On the other hand, the study should also be an example for more diversity and equality in medicine and medical research.
